Homeschooling
Our Home Schooling Office provides dedicated administrative support and academic oversight for families educating children outside the traditional classroom setting. Working alongside the Ministry of Education (DEM), we ensure all homeschooling families remain in compliance with Quebec’s educational regulations.
From initial learning project guidance to final high school graduation pathways, our office serves as a central resource for evaluation and curriculum support. We pride ourselves on a personalized approach that recognizes the specific educational philosophy of each family, providing a service that is independent of standard school-based operations but fully integrated with provincial learning goals.
Laws and Regulations
All children residing in Quebec must attend school;
- from the first day of the school calendar in the school year following that in which they turn 6 years old;
- until the last day of the school calendar in the school year during which they turn 16 years old OR at the end of which they obtain a diploma awarded by the Minister of Education.
However, parents in Quebec may choose to homeschool their children. Under the Education Act, a child who is approved to receive homeschooling may be exempt from compulsory school attendance.
Registering for Homeschooling
Note: In order to provide ample processing time at the Ministry level, we advise parents to submit their annual declaration to homeschool by July 1st. If a child stops attending an educational institution during the course of the school year, written notice must be sent within 10 days of the date on which school attendance ceases.
- Submit the annual declaration to homeschool using the DEM secured website.
- Send your child’s learning project to the Ministry of Education.
- In order to benefit from the support services offered by our school board, parents must complete the admissions process with the Education Services Department at our board office (15 Katimavik, Gatineau, Qc, J9J 0E9), reside in the territory covered by our school board, and be eligible for English instruction under the Charter of French Language.
To register with WQSB please contact us at homeschooling@wqsb.qc.ca and provide the following documents to complete the admissions process:
- Homeschooling Application for Admission Form
- Your child’s official birth certificate (long form) bearing the names of both parents;
- A proof of residency on our school board’s territory (utility bill, municipal tax statement);
- Your child’s certificate of eligibility to English education or an application for a certificate of eligibility to English education (contact us for assistance) and proof of citizenship for parent.
